Research IN THIS SECTION
ABH participates actively in federal and statewide research initiatives that rapidly move promising evidence-based treatment into community settings. Partnering with major academic institutions, ABH provides contract management and behavioral health information technology expertise to coordinate research operations, data management, and reporting. Providers in the ABH network benefit from the opportunity to participate in the latest research studies and clients benefit from evidence-based treatment protocols.

Current research collaborations include:

NIDA Clinical Trials Network (CTN) — In September 1999, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) awarded a five-year grant to Yale University Principal Investigator Dr. Kathleen Carroll to form the New England Node of the CTN. Yale contracted with ABH to serve as the Administrative Data Coordinating Center for the New England Node.

The goal of the CTN is to more rapidly move promising evidence-based drug addiction treatments into community settings through close collaboration between substance abuse researchers and community treatment providers. Through ABH, Yale developed partnerships with five Connecticut community treatment providers to implement CTN studies.

ABH performs key functions including development and maintenance of a state-of-the-art information system, protocol coordination including hiring and integration of research assistants into clinic settings, and performing detailed quality checks to ensure client safety and confidentiality. These functions support all New England Node operations and provide linkages with NIDA and other regional nodes across the country.

Breaking the Cycle of Behavioral Health Problems and Crime — In October 2004, the National Institute of Justice and the Office of Juvenile Delinquency Prevention awarded a grant to University of Connecticut Health Center (UCONN) Principal Investigator Dr. Julian Ford. UCONN Health Center contracted with ABH to provide administrative, operational, and data management support for the study.

The goal of the project is to test the efficacy of two Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) therapies. ABH is collaborating with UCONN staff to develop and implement all phases of the study.

ABH performs several key functions including:

  1. development of a data collection and cleaning system; and,

  2. study coordination (including recruitment of participants, interviewing participants, and tracking clients through the study sessions).

Computer Based Training program for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT for CBT) — In January 2003, ABH joined Yale University Principal Investigator Dr. Kathleen Carroll, taking on project management functions in creating a computer-based application where CBT skills can be “taught” through an interactive computer program.

The goal of this project is to continue to find ways to disseminate the theories taught through CBT and to integrate these skill sets to help people cope with their substance use problems.

ABH’s key functions include coordination of computer interface development, collaboration with the clinic running the study to integrate the project into their current system, recruitment and follow-up of participants, and assurance of data quality, client safety, and confidentiality.
